FontExplorer X Pro Client has been optimized for Microsoft Windows® XP SP3, Windows 7 and Windows 8. It runs on both 32-bit as well as on 64-bit Windows Systems. Supported languages include English and German.

If working in a FontExplorer X Server environment, this client version requires FontExplorer X Server version 1.7.x or later. However, we recommend you update your server to the new version 1.9 in order to get the most out of all the great new server features. Older FontExplorer X Server versions are not supported.

Version 2.6

New Features

  • The font list search functionality has been modified so that it searches the entire font name for the specified string. Previously it only searched for names beginning with the string
  • FontExplorer X Pro is now available in the French language

Resolved

  • FontExplorer X Pro crashed on startup if there were invalid entries in the System Fonts Registry
  • Various minor UI issues though out the application

Known Issues

  • While font activation is in progress other processes, such as font import, can be started. This slows down the activation process
  • On a multi-user machine (one machine with separate login accounts) FontExplorer X Pro can only be launched by one user. If another user attempts to launch FontExplorer X Pro a message will be displayed: "FontExplorer X Pro is already running in another user session"
  • Manually activated PostScript fonts do not display in Adobe applications when font activation is temporary. Workaround: select Activate fonts permanently (required when using Adobe applications) in Options/Advanced panel or activate fonts via the plug-in font request dialog
  • The auto-activation setting will not be effective for the QuarkXPress Plug-Ins. When opening a QuarkXPress document, the plug-in dialog will always open. If all the fonts are available in FontExplorer X Pro simply click on Activate All
  • Smart Sets do not work correctly when placed in Folders
  • The activation status of a folder is not correctly shown in the source list when all fonts in the contained set are activated. This only occurs when the setting "Show status when activating/deactivating fonts" is disabled
  • When a subscription font does not appear in FontExplorer X Pro for any reason, manual synchronization from the SkyFonts client does not cause the font to appear. Workaround: Restart the SkyFonts client
  • The PDF is not correctly generated when exporting OpenType PostScript flavored fonts from the preview as a PDF image. Other image formats work correctly
  • The Activate and Deactivate menu items in the contextual menu are not available on Sets, Folders or Smart Sets that contain both active and expired SkyFonts

Plug-Ins

Known Issues

  • Adobe Photoshop 64-bit plug-in no longer supports the "Replace" function in the plug-in request dialog
  • Photoshop CS5–CC: Fonts in layered TIFF files are not activated by the plugin. Activation occurs correctly when converted to a PSD file
  • Missing fonts are not detected in Illustrator PDF files and no font request occurs
  • No font request occurs on EPS documents with non-embedded fonts
  • When using Adobe Creative Suite products to create new documents, Postscript server fonts that are activated on the server are not displayed in the Font dropdown menu. Postscript fonts in an existing CS document that are activated on a server, will behave properly; the fonts will appear in the Font dropdown menu and can be activated/deactivated appropriately. This issue only applies to PS server fonts, all other font types (TrueType, OpenType) work correctly. The work around is for the customer to update their PS server font to one of these other font formats. Local Postscript fonts will behave properly in Adobe Creative Suite products

FontExplorer X Server Users and Administrators

New (Requires FontExplorer X Server 1.9)

  • Added the administrator setting for "automatic log out" to the Options, Users and Groups panel
  • Updated the Statistics panel to include the system user name and information for multiple logged in users. Removed "Number of Logins"
  • A new feature allows administrators to specify whether users are permitted to log in to the FontExplorer X Server from multiple machines or users accounts with the same server user credentials. This is controlled from the client under the "Login and Log Out Settings" and can be specified as a global, User or Group permission
  • Updated the Statistics panel to include the system user name and information for multiple logged in users. Removed "Number of Logins"
  • The "Browse all Server Fonts" feature has been extended to now also provide previews for fonts in Mac TrueType and Mac dfont formats

FontExplorer X Server Users and Administrators

Resolved (Requires FontExplorer X Server 1.9)

  • Some font entries were missing in the Font License Report file when the filter was set to group by "Fonts"
  • When an LDAP Security Group name contained certain characters (asterisk, parenthesis, slash, hyphen or underscore) then users contained in that group were not shown
  • When attempting to log in to the FontExplorer X Server with a user name which contained non-alphanumeric characters an XML error occurred and login was not possible
  • FontExplorer X Pro sometimes crashed when logging in to the server if several thousand fonts were being downloaded
  • The connected LDAP domain was disconnected upon switching out of the LDAP panel and it was necessary to manually reconnect when opening the LDAP panel again
  • A client crash occurred when attempting to download server fonts via the context menu when WYSIWYG was turned on in the font list
  • FontExplorer X Pro randomly crashed after logging in to the Server and selecting another panel
  • Users that were already added to a group were incorrectly shown in the search list of users not assigned to the group

FontExplorer X Server Users and Administrators

Known Issues

  • When generating a License Report the "invalid e-mail address" warning is shown even though the "send notification" option is not selected
  • A generic error message is shown if a disabled LDAP user attempts to log in to the FontExplorer X Server
  • Imported LDAP users are not shown in Account Management and status shows "not imported" if before completing the import process a source list item is selected, the changes in the LDAP panel saved, then return to the LDAP panel and complete the import process
  • If a nested LDAP Security Group name contains special characters such as *, /, ( or ) then the users inside the nested group are not shown

Important: If upgrading to FontExplorer X Pro 4 you will need to purchase a license upgrade. Purchase Upgrade

  • This version of FontExplorer X Pro no longer supports Mac OS X 10.5 nor the PowerPC platform. Mac OS X 10.6 or later is required
  • If working in a FontExplorer X Server environment, this client version requires FontExplorer X Server version 1.7.x or later. However, we recommend you update your server to the new version 1.9 in order to get the most out of all the great new server features. Older FontExplorer X Server versions are not supported.

Version 4.2

Resolved

  • It was not possible to delete a custom classification as the name was not selectable in the Classification dialog
  • OS X 10.9 only – "Clean System Fonts Folders" mistakenly removed some required system fonts from /System/Library/Fonts and /Library/Fonts

Known Issues

  • Following an update from Linotype FontExplorer X to FontExplorer X Pro the activation status of manually activated fonts may be lost and the fonts will need to be reactivated
  • If older System Font Collections from previous OS version are available, FontExplorer X Pro may crash when performing operations with the System Font Collections under OS X 10.9. Workaround: delete the old System Font Collections from "/Users/[USERNAME]/Library/FontCollections"

Plug-Ins Resolved

  • Adobe InCopy CC – InCopy sometimes did not recognize the FontExplorer X plug-in due to a permissions problem

Plug-Ins Known Issues

  • Photoshop CS5–CC: Fonts in layered TIFF files are not activated by the plugin. Activation occurs correctly when converted to a PSD file
  • Missing fonts are not detected in Illustrator PDF files and no font request occurs
  • No font request occurs on EPS documents with non-embedded fonts
  • Photoshop plugin Version 3.5.1: The font request dialog will erroneously open when a Photoshop file is selected in the Open dialog. Workaround: open files via double-click or by dragging them to the Photoshop application icon

FontExplorer X Server Users and Administrators

New (Requires FontExplorer X Server 1.9)

  • Added information to the Users and Groups panels to show the total number of Users or Groups and the number of selected items. This is displayed in the status bar at the bottom of the panel. Nested groups are reflected in the number of selections only when they are explicitly selected, otherwise only the top level group is counted

Resolved (Requires FontExplorer X Server 1.9)

  • Some font entries were missing in the Font License Report file when the filter was set to group by "Fonts"
  • When an LDAP Security Group name contained certain characters (asterisk, parenthesis, slash, hyphen or underscore) then users contained in that group were not shown
  • Non-downloaded server fonts were shown in the Web Preview but could not be correctly applied to text. The font list now only shows downloaded server fonts which will always provide a correct preview

Known Issues

  • Imported LDAP users are not shown in Account Management and status shows "not imported" if before completing the import process a source list item is selected, the changes in the LDAP panel saved, then return to the LDAP panel and complete the import process
  • If a nested LDAP Security Group name contains special characters such as *, /, ( or ) then the users inside the nested group are not shown
  • The Preview feature for non-downloaded server fonts does not support previewing of Mac or Windows PostScript fonts. A message indicates that these fonts types need to be downloaded in order to preview

Release notes

FontExplorer X Server version 1.7.1 requires FontExplorer X Pro version 3.5.x for Macintosh or FontExplorer X Pro version 2.3.3 for Windows. It is not compatible with older client versions!
Before updating a server version always make a backup of your server files. You can use the backup function in the server administration section of FontExplorer X Pro.

Important Notes

After updating the FontExplorer X Server version, restart any FontExplorer X Pro clients that were connected to a previous server version before logging in to the new server
When updating FontExplorer X Server version 1.5.x to version 1.7.x in a Master/Slave configuration, be sure to configure and save the domain information for the Master server via the LDAP panel of the client. Thereafter, restart the Slave server so replication occurs and the LDAP configuration changes get copied to the Slave server

Changes in Version 1.7.1

New or Changed Server Features

  • When an LDAP synchronization fails, further attempts will automatically occur at 30 minute intervals. If, after three attempts, it is still not possible to synchronize, an error message will be logged and an e-mail send to the administrator provided the e-mail settings have been configured. On manual synchronization, an error message will be displayed on the client machine that initiated the synchronization command

Resolved

  • Following an update from FontExplorer X Server version 1.5.x to 1.7 it was not possible to download fonts from the server
  • If a scheduled synchronization failed due to an error on the LDAP server, users already imported into FontExplorer X Server were getting deleted
  • After updating from FontExplorer X Server version 1.6.1 to 1.7, it occasionally occurred that the used font license counts were no longer accurate
  • When the FontExplorer X and LDAP servers went into an idle state for an extended period of time (24+ hours) immediately following a synchronization, users were getting deleted from the FontExplorer X Server
  • The FontExplorer X Server crashed and automatically restarted if the LDAP server was unavailable at the time a scheduled synchronization started
  • Configured domains may sporadically disappear from the FontExplorer X LDAP panel if the LDAP server could not be reached
  • The FontExplorer X Server preference pane in System Preferences would occasionally hang (Macintosh only)
  • The port number in the FontExplorer X Server "Slave" panel was displayed incorrectly under OS X 10.8 (Macintosh only)

Known Issues

  • SMTP configuration information is not passed from the Master server to the Slave server during replication. License reports and auto error reporting can therefore not be sent from the Slave server
  • Removing a monitored group from the active directory where all users were already imported into FontExplorer X Server, will not automatically remove the group and its users from the FontExplorer X Server when a scheduled synchronization occurs
  • When FontExplorer X Server has been updated from 1.5.x or 1.6.x, the domain name is not automatically appended to the LDAP imported server group names
  • The FontExplorer X Server occasionally crashes when deleting a server group after updating from 1.5.x to 1.6.x to 1.7.1. This does not occur on a new installation of version 1.7.x
  • Following an upgrade from FontExplorer X Server version 1.5.x to 1.7.1, server users at the LDAP root node will be erroneously deleted when a new root node user is imported. The deleted root node user will show the status "Not Imported" in the LDAP panel
  • The FontExplorer X Server license file (.fsl) can not be imported to a Windows Server 2008 machine when file encryption is active. Workaround: disable file encryption before importing the license file
  • Font Licensing: When a change is made to the available license count on a font it is not reflected by the "Last Modified" date
  • The User "Real Name" may be shown incorrectly in the FontExplorer X Server "Users" panel when the name contains certain accented characters
  • The FontExplorer X Server is unable to access a mapped drive for the destination of server backup files (Windows only)
  • Synchronization may fail when new users are added to a monitored LDAP root node
  • Groups and users deleted on the Active Directory are sometimes not deleted in the FontExplorer X Groups or Users panel following a synchronization
  • The checkbox status of imported users may be incorrectly set after deleting the group in the FontExplorer X Server Groups panel
