Resolved Issues

• Server fonts using the "Force Activate" option will correctly retain their activation status when FontExplorer X Pro is restarted in offline mode. Previously these fonts remained deactivated until the user logged in to the server

• Adobe InDesign and Illustrator Users: PostScript Type 1 fonts activated from the FontExplorer X Server will correctly show kerning in Adobe InDesign CS5+ and Illustrator CS5+ applications. Previously this only worked with CS4 or earlier versions of the Adobe applications or when using locally activated PostScript fonts

• Adobe InDesign Users: Added a FontExplorer X Pro preference key which will control whether server fonts are visible or invisible when running the InDesign packaging function. To make server fonts visible for the packaging process, quit FontExplorer X Pro and Adobe InDesign. On the client workstation, enter the following command in the Terminal application followed by the Enter key:

 

defaults write com.linotype.FontExplorerX disableIndesignPackageFixScript -bool FALSE

 

To make server fonts invisible again for the packager enter the following command in the Terminal application followed by the Enter key:

 

defaults write com.linotype.FontExplorerX disableIndesignPackageFixScript -bool TRUE

 

If no action is taken, the server fonts will continue to be packaged invisibly

 

Known Issues
 

• Mac OS X 10.6 only: Fonts with # in their filename will not appear in FontExplorer X when they are located in /Library/Fonts. When imported into FontExplorer X Pro or FontExplorer X Server they cannot be activated nor will they display a preview. Resolved with OS X 10.7.x

• After fast user switching FontExplorer X Pro refreshes the fonts in order to ensure that any System Font changes made by other users are available to all users on that machine. When doing this, the FontExplorer X Pro main window will always come to the foreground

• Mac OS X 10.5.x only (Resolved with Mac OS X 10.6): Removing font suitcases from a System Collection may cause FontExplorer X Pro to crash if some of the fonts in the suitcase are not activated. This may also occur when resolving conflicts and the font suitcase is contained in a System Collection

• Using Mac OS X 10.5.8 – Move the fonts you wish to keep to a new System Collection, then delete the System Collection containing the suitcase font

 

Known PlugIn Issues
 

• Photoshop plugin Version 3.5.1: The font request dialog will erroneously open when a Photoshop file is selected in the Open dialog. Workaround: open files via double-click or by dragging them to the Photoshop application icon

 

 

Resolved Issues:

• Preview images can be successfully dragged to another location when FontExplorer X Pro is running in 64-bit mode
• FontExplorer X Pro no longer crashes when cleaning the organized fonts folder

• The content of a print book, created from a selected Set, Folder or Smart Set is now correctly sorted in alphabetical order

Server Users and Server Administators?

• Server font license view has been completely reworked to provide more granularity, flexibility, better performance and reporting features

• Server font license information has been extended to include license name, location and comments in addition to the license count. These attributes can be specified during font import or directly in the License View

• Added capability to automatically synchronize with the LDAP directory at a scheduled time

• Available credentials are now passed through when Fetch DN is called in the LDAP panel

• It is now possible to select all (CMD + A) or multiple server groups and security levels (shift or CMD + click) in the Account Management panels for the purpose of deleting them

• All lists can now be sorted by any column in ascending or descending order

• Added a Server preference setting to FontExplorer X Pro which will allow the user to specify whether FontExplorer X Server fonts will be reactivated or not when FontExplorer X Pro starts. Default setting is "reactivate"

Known PlugIn Issues

• Adobe Illustrator CS3, CS4 & CS5: If an Adobe Illustrator document contains a placed PDF or illustrator document with embedded fonts, an incorrect font request will occur with the status missing. Activate any fonts that the document may require and ignore the incorrect requests by clicking on the Done button
• FontExplorer X Pro will not auto-start for an Adobe or Quark document when the Mac user account is managed with parental controls. Workaround: Start FontExplorer X Pro prior to opening Adobe or Quark documents
• Photoshop CS5 crashes when the FontExplorer X Pro plug-in is installed but FontExplorer X Pro or its license is missing. Solution: Remove the FontExplorer X Pro Plug-in
• Font activation with Adobe Photoshop CS3/CS4/CS5: Situation – Fonts have been activated by FontExplorer X Pro (automatically or manually) after starting the program Adobe Photoshop CS3, CS4 or CS5. Selecting a text layer in Photoshop will cause a message to appear stating that the fonts are missing for the text layer and font substitution will occur. Continue? This message should be responded to with "OK". Activated fonts will be correctly displayed and not substituted

 

Resolved Issues for FontExplorer X Server Users and Server Administrators:

• Fonts uploaded to the FontExplorer X Server version 1.6 were sometimes missing after restarting the server. This could also be seen after restoring a backup or after server replication, both of which require a server restart
• Fixed an issue where login was slow when connecting to servers with many nested sets and folders
• Server error messages were not shown correctly when the language was set to French
• LDAP directory was not displayed correctly when accessing Open Directory (Mac client only)
• With "Hide Library" enabled, users with "Write" permissions on Sets were able to select File>Import
• Connection between server and client was periodically lost during font upload/download
• After a long connection (more than 8 hour) users were not notified that their login had expired and were forced to quit the client in order to log in again
• In the LDAP Configure Domains window, the Domain Name field allowed entry of IP addresses. An error is now displayed when attempting to save the configuration
• In the LDAP Configure Domains window, the Domain Name field was labeled "IP or Hostname" in the German and French translations. This has been changed to "Domain Name" (German: "Domänen-Name:" French: "Nom de Domaine")
• After upgrades of server with LDAP Authentication enabled, administrators were not automatically directed to LDAP Configure Domains window and instructed to enter domain information
• Windows server panel Backup Destination now allows selection of a network directory for backup
• Offline usage information in the small info panel is not displayed accurately when not logged in to the FontExplorer X Server
• LDAP Synchronization would occasionally assign users to the wrong group

    • Photoshop CS5 crashes when the FontExplorer X Pro plug-in is installed but FontExplorer X Pro or its license is missing. Solution: Remove the FontExplorer X Pro Plug-in

New Features

• System Font Protection: Mac OS X has a System method, that monitors the System Font Folder and checks whether all "protected" System Fonts are still in place. If not, they will be copied back into the System Font directory. FontExplorer X Pro 2.5.2 introduces a function to the “Tools” menu which can turn System Font Protection on or off. When turning System Font Protection back on, you can optionally restore removed system fonts. (Requires OS 10.5 or higher)
  Note: If you have turned System Font Protection off and replaced System Fonts you should not use the "Clean System Fonts Folders…" feature as doing so will remove your replacement System Fonts

• Added PlugIns for Adobe Illustrator CS5, Adobe InDesign CS5 and Adobe PhotoShop CS5 (Intel Macs, OS 10.5 or higher).

• Added the menu item "Log out" to the server context menu and to the "Server" menu.

• Users with offline permission will now have access to their downloaded server fonts at all times. Offline mode will automatically be in effect whenever disconnected from the server – prior to login and following logout. The Work Offline and Work Online menu items have therefore been removed from the server context menu.

 

Resolved

• Offline mode would not go into effect after restarting FontExplorer X Pro when disconnected from the FontExplorer X Server.

• Increasing/Decreasing the Preview font size via the toolbar icons did not produce the correct result.

• When QuarkXPress 8 was installed, the option to clean the QuarkXPress font caches was occasionally disabled in the "Clean Application Font Caches" dialog.

• It was possible to drag multiple items to the name field of a Set or Folder making the names in the source list unreadable. This is no longer possible. Multi-line Set names that occurred with an earlier version of FontExplorer X Pro will be reduced to one line following this software update. It is however, recommended to correct the names to avoid extremely long entries in the Information Area and Smart Set dialog. To do this:
  • Select the Set or Folder
  • Double click on the name or hit the Enter key
  • Assign a new meaningful name

• Resolved with Mac OS X 10.6.3 – Postscript Type 1 fonts residing in a suitcase which contained more than 10 font styles would not always activate in FontExplorer X Pro and their preview showed "Not Available".

• Mac OS X 10.6.x only: Right-clicking in the Summary tab of the Font Information dialog would produce a crash.

• "Contained in" did not show all the Sets a font was contained in but instead only showed the Font Library. This effected both the small information area in the lower left of the main window and the Summary tab of the Font Information dialog.

New Features

• Reworked interface – The interface of FontExplorer X Pro has been streamlined and now better suits the changed functionality. The Library has a new structure to enable administrators to hide certain areas from users view in a FontExplorer X Server environment.

• Wide Screen Mode – FontExplorer X Pro now features an optional Wide-Screen mode that sets the preview area to the right. Now users of wide-screen displays can make full use of the whole view area of their display by simply clicking the wide-screen icon.

• Transparency Mode – The preview area of the main window and the detailed preview of the Info window can now be switched to transparency mode and can be set to different levels. Using this functionality to lay the FontExplorer X Pro window over an existing document, users can get a idea of how certain fonts will look when used in this document.

• Classification – The new classification feature allows users to “tag” their fonts by freely configurable criteria. Additionally it can be used to automatically set classification by receiving this data from the Linotype Server. The automatic classification is available for all fonts that have such an entry in the Linotype database.

• Print – FontExplorer X Pro now has a printing feature and as you would expect, it is the most versatile on the market. Users can easily create their own templates to print an overview of their fonts or use one of the templates that come preinstalled. Configuration is accomplished through drag and drop of page elements, more detailed settings are available for every option. The preview shows a WYSIWYG view that automatically updates when you change the elements. This feature is available for Mac OS X 10.5 or later.

• Mac OS X 10.6: Fonts activated in FontExplorer X Pro would no longer appear in the Apple font panel after logout/log in

• Mac OS X 10.6: Fonts activated in FontExplorer X Pro would not appear in the Apple font panel if the application was already started when font activation occurred.

• Mac OS X 10.6: Fonts deactivated in FontExplorer X Pro would still appear in the Apple font panel if the application was running when the font was deactivated.

• When FontExplorer X Pro was specified as a startup item, the main window would be hidden after starting.

• An issue where some keystroke sequences were being incorrectly displayed in the character preview panel.
• An issue were fonts have not been correctly activated following a restart when working with Network Home Directories.
• An issue where Sets would sporadically disappear after restart when working in a Network Home Directory environment.
• An issue where Fonts defined as permanently activated were occasionally deactivated after a restart.
• An issue where Adobe® InDesign® CS2/CS3/CS4 would crash when opening documents containing graphic elements (EPS, PDF, etc.) with non-embedded fonts. (resolved with PlugIn update)
• An issue where FontExplorer® X Pro sporadically crashed when removing font suitcases from a System Collection or resolving font conflicts under Mac OS® X 10.5.x. This is resolved when the operating system is updated to Mac OS X 10.6.

• An issue where the Plugin Manager would sporadically show the incorrect path to a plugin, usually on multi-partition machines.
• An issue where sets and smartsets were missing after upgrading from Linotype FontExplorer® X 1.2.3 to FontExplorer X Pro. The database will automatically repair itself when FontExplorer X Pro 2.0.2 is started.
• An issue where activated fonts were not reactivated after restarting the system.
• An issue where under Mac OS® X 10.4 the setup assistant would activate each time FontExplorer X Pro started.
• An issue where auto font activation in Adobe® InDesign® via plugIn would occasionally hang.
• An occasional crash during font import.
• An issue where FontExplorer X Pro would sporadically hang when opening the authentication dialog, e.g. when attempting to clean the font caches.

• Updating from Mac OS X 10.5.x to Mac OS X 10.5.7 resolves a problem where "Rare Ligatures" did not display. The Mac OS update resolves this problem in all FontExplorer X Pro versions (1.2.3, 2.0 and 2.0.1).

Known issues

• After upgrading from FontExplorer X version 1.2.3, the permanently activated fonts will be located in the "Activated until Log Out" set. If you wish to keep these fonts permanently activated, click on the set, select all fonts and drag them to the "Activated Permanently" set.
• Mac OS X 10.5.x only:

  With some fonts the rare ligatures feature does not work. According to Apple, this is a known bug which will be fixed in an upcoming Mac OS update.

New Features

• Server font license view has been completely reworked to provide more granularity, flexibility, better performance and reporting features

• Server font license information has been extended to include license name, location and comments in addition to the license count. These attributes can be specified during font import or directly in the License View

Known Issues

• It is not possible to remove newly imported fonts from a server set without first logging out and back in again

• When a font is downloaded from a server and then activated via the contextual menu the checkbox will not show a checkmark although the font is activated. Workaround: Click directly on the activation box of the font to download and activate. Checkbox will then show up correctly

• FontExplorer X Pro shows incorrect set / folder information in the source list when a user has only login permissions

• When switching between LDAP nodes after changes have been made to LDAP data, no 'Save' dialogue is shown

• Entering a malformed e-mail address in the Server SMTP settings does not cause an error message

• When trying to send a report from License View using a malformed e-mail address, a success message will erroneously be shown

• After reclaiming all Font Licenses from a machine, the machine name is still shows up in the assigned filtered list, even though  there are no fonts listed

• When both FontExplorer X Pro and FontExplorer X Server are installed on Virtual Machines, occasionally all the fonts from a client are reclaimed when using the option "Reclaim Font License > From All Machines" to reclaim a single font from this client

• System-Wide Font Requests are not supported at the moment

• On a multi-user machine (one machine with separate login accounts) FontExplorer X Pro can only be launched by one user. If another user attempts to launch FontExplorer X Pro a message will be displayed: "FontExplorer X Pro is already running in another user session"

• Manually activated PostScript fonts do not display in Adobe applications when font activation is temporary. Workaround: select Activate fonts permanently (required when using Adobe applications) in Options/Advanced panel or activate fonts via the plug-in font request dialog

• The auto-activation setting will not be effective for the Quark XPress Plug-Ins. When opening a Quark XPress document, the plug-in dialog will always open. If all the fonts are available in FontExplorer X Pro simply click on Activate All

• Smart Sets do not work correctly when placed in Folders

• It is not possible to remove newly imported fonts from a server set without logging back on to the server

Adobe Creative Suite applications

• When using Adobe Creative Suite (2,3,4 & 5) products to create new documents, Postscript server fonts that are activated on the server are not displayed in the Font dropdown menu. Postscript fonts in an existing CS document that are activated on a server, will behave properly; the fonts will appear in the Font dropdown menu and can be activated/deactivated appropriately. This issue only applies to PS server fonts, all other font types (TrueType, OpenType) work correctly. The work around is for the customer to update their PS server font to one of these other font formats. Local Postscript fonts will behave properly in Adobe Creative Suite products

 

Adobe InDesign

• When a font contained in a very long set name is displayed in the plug-in request dialog, the set information is cropped

Server Administration:

• A font was not removed from server library until the next login (or Reload Sources operation), when a user with Write permissions had removed a font from a server set
• Font counter showed 0 after uploading fonts in a new server set via a second client (Mac or Win) while a user was logged in. This remained across logins and subsequent Reload Sources
• A crash occurred when reimporting a font to the server library after Remove Set and Contained Fonts, where the font had been included
• Server set counter showed incorrect font counter after Drag&Drop import of a huge amount of fonts
• While logged in under a standard User Account, the font counters were reset to 0 when selecting Reload Sources
• Removing a font from a server set occasionally resulted in a crash
• Sometimes the client crashed when importing a font to an existing server set
• When the server was stopped during account creation and Save was pressed in this situation, an exception occurred. Re-login was not possible until client was restarted ("No Permission" error)

Adobe Creative Suite applications:

• When using Adobe Creative Suite (2,3,4 & 5) products to create new documents, Postscript server fonts that are activated on the server are not displayed in the Font dropdown menu. Postscript fonts in an existing CS document that are activated on a server, will behave properly; the fonts will appear in the Font dropdown menu and can be activated/deactivated appropriately. This issue only applies to PS server fonts, all other font types (TrueType, OpenType) work correctly. The work around is for the customer to update their PS server font to one of these other font formats. Local Postscript fonts will behave properly in Adobe Creative Suite products

 

Adobe InDesign:

• When a font contained in a very long set name is displayed in the plug-in request dialog, the set information is cropped

Resolved

• An intermittent bug was fixed which caused the application to crash during first installation 
• In some cases FontExplorerX Pro crashed during initialization
  Loading the Configuration did not work correctly when using the 'Replace' option

Changes in Version 1.6.1

Resolved Issues:

• Fonts uploaded to the FontExplorer X Server version 1.6 were sometimes missing after restarting the server. This could also be seen after restoring a backup or after server replication, both of which require a server restart
• Fixed an issue where login was slow when connecting to servers with many nested sets and folders
• Server error messages were not shown correctly when the language was set to French
• LDAP directory was not displayed correctly when accessing Open Directory (Mac client only)
• With "Hide Library" enabled, users with "Write" permissions on Sets were able to select File>Import
• Connection between server and client was periodically lost during font upload/download
• After a long connection (more than 8 hours) users were not notified that their login had expired and were forced to quit the client in order to log in again
• In the LDAP Configure Domains window, the Domain Name field allowed entry of IP addresses. An error is now displayed when attempting to save the configuration
• In the LDAP Configure Domains window, the Domain Name field was labeled "IP or Hostname" in the German and French translations. This has been changed to "Domain Name" (German: "Domänen-Name:" French: "Nom de Domaine")
• After upgrades of server with LDAP Authentication enabled, administrators were not automatically directed to LDAP Configure Domains window and instructed to enter domain information
• Windows server panel Backup Destination now allows selection of a network directory for backup
• Offline usage information in the small info panel is not displayed accurately when not logged in to the FontExplorer X Server
• Slave servers would sometimes fail to automatically restart, especially after long replications. This would require manually restarting the server panel and the server to correct the issue
• Slave replication would loop if replication time was less than a minute
• LDAP Synchronization would occasionally assign users to the wrong group

 

Server New Features:

• The Slave server will now attempt to restart itself multiple times in the event of restart failures after replication (Windows only)
• The Windows server can now be configured in the Logging tab to send email notification of server crashes

 

Server known issues:

• Due to changes to better handle concurrent user load, server upload and download times may be slower than those seen with FontExplorer X Server version 1.5
• OS X 10.4 only: "Check for updates" will fail when updating FontExplorer X Server software version 1.6 to version 1.6.1. A message "The update is improperly signed" will be shown which must be responded to with "Cancel update". Workaround: Download the new server version from the FontExplorer X website at www.fontexplorerx.com/download. Click on "Download FontExplorer X Server 1.6.1 for Mac and Windows including FontExplorer X Pro Clients for Mac and Windows" and install the FontExplorer X Server.pkg located in the folder "Server Mac"

Known Issues

 

• Mac OS X 10.6 – Activating and deactivating fonts is somewhat slower than under Mac OS X 10.5. This can have an influence on logout time when many fonts are activated. An upcoming release of Mac OS X may resolve this.
• Font Classification cannot be applied to server fonts.
• Server fonts activated via plugin request will not be automatically deactivated when the requesting application quits even though the option is selected in the plug-in manager.

 
Other Changes

 

• This release contains an updated "Software License Agreement". The limitation to use only one instance of the server has been removed, as this no longer coincides with the new "Master/Slave" feature.

• An issue with the permissions hierarchy – User permissions now have priority over group permissions (Areas: "Offline usage" and "Hide store").
• An issue where a server reboot would sporadically cause Server Sets to disappear.
