  • If working in a FontExplorer X Server environment, this client version requires FontExplorer X Server version 1.9 or later. However, we recommend you update your Server to the new version 2.5 in order to get the most out of all the great new server features. Older FontExplorer X Server versions are not supported
  • This version of FontExplorer X Pro requires OS X 10.8 or later

Changes in Version 5.5

New Features and Improvements

  • FontExplorer X Pro now addresses compatibility issues with PostScript fonts and OS X 10.11 (El Capitan) by automatically identifying problematic PostScript Fonts and providing the user an option to automatically resolve the issue. New settings in the Advanced panel of the FontExplorer X Pro preferences support this feature for local fonts

Resolved

  • An incorrect font icon (dimmed status) was shown in the font list for OpenType fonts that were grouped by family or style linked
  • When an InDesign document requested a TrueType font via the plugin, FontExplorer X Pro sometimes showed the font as missing

PlugIns

Resolved

  • FontExplorer X Pro crashed when loading the new plugin after a successful update

PlugIns

Known issues

  • Photoshop CS5–CC 2014: Fonts in layered TIFF files are not activated by the plugin. Activation occurs correctly when converted to a PSD file
  • Missing fonts are not detected in Illustrator PDF files and no font request occurs
  • No font request occurs on EPS documents with non-embedded fonts

FontExplorer X Server Users and Administrators

New Features and Improvements

  • Added backup management features to allow adding comments to backups, automatically deleting backups and permanently keeping backups (requires FontExplorer X Server version 2.5)
  • Added optional advanced client-server communication (non XML communication)
  • FontExplorer X Pro now addresses compatibility issues with PostScript fonts downloaded from the Server and OS X 10.11 (El Capitan). When the option is activated, PostScript Fonts will be made accessible to applications that require such fonts in a special location

FontExplorer X Server Users and Administrators

Resolved

  • Disable Client Updates setting was not enabled in the trial version of FontExplorer X Pro and as a result, the software update popup was appearing on every startup of FontExplorer X Pro
  • FontExplorer X Pro had performance issues when downloading several thousand server fonts
  • FontExplorer X Pro requested login credentials on startup for login-items located on a network drive, when the drive was not mounted

FontExplorer X Server Users and Administrators

Known issues

  • Imported LDAP users are not shown in Account Management and status shows "not imported" if before completing the import process a source list item is selected, the changes in the LDAP panel saved, then return to the LDAP panel and complete the import process
  • If a nested LDAP Security Group name contains special characters such as *, /, ( or ) then the users inside the nested group are not shown
  • The Preview feature for non-downloaded server fonts does not support previewing of Mac or Windows PostScript fonts. A message indicates that these font types need to be downloaded in order to preview

Release notes

System Requirements

FontExplorer X Pro Client has been optimized for Microsoft Windows® Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 and requires .Net framework 4.5. It runs on both 32-bit as well as on 64-bit Windows Systems. Supported languages include English, German and French.

If working in a FontExplorer X Server environment, this client version requires FontExplorer X Server version 1.9.3 or later. However, we recommend you update your server to the latest version 2.5 in order to get the most out of all the great new server features. Older FontExplorer X Server versions are not supported.

Version 3.5

Resolved

  • FontExplorer X Pro did not recognize subscription or perpetual fonts that were synced via SkyFonts
  • FontExplorer X Pro occasionally crashed when downloading a Typekit font over a slow internet connection
  • Many source list items that were hidden in the "View" ribbon were unhidden after exiting and relaunching FontExplorer X Pro
  • FontExplorer X Pro was unable to display the last Font of a list in the Import Fonts dialog
  • FontExplorer X Pro crashed on "Checking for activated fonts" when auto-launching the application on machine startup
  • When uninstalling FontExplorer X Pro 3.0, all files were not correctly removed from the computer

Known Issues

  • If a font that is missing in FontExplorer X Pro is re-imported from another path, the font will still be shown as missing (in red) after the application is restarted
  • On a multi-user machine (one machine with separate login accounts) FontExplorer X Pro can only be launched by one user. If another user attempts to launch FontExplorer X Pro a message will be displayed: "FontExplorer X Pro is already running in another user session"
  • Manually activated PostScript fonts do not display in Adobe applications when font activation is temporary. Workaround: select Activate fonts permanently (required when using Adobe applications) in Options/Advanced panel or activate fonts via the plug-in font request dialog
  • The auto-activation setting will not be effective for the QuarkXPress Plug-Ins. When opening a QuarkXPress document, the plug-in dialog will always open. If all the fonts are available in FontExplorer X Pro simply click on Activate All
  • The activation status of a folder is not correctly shown in the source list when all fonts in the contained set are activated. This only occurs when the setting "Show status when activating/deactivating fonts" is disabled
  • When a subscription font does not appear in FontExplorer X Pro for any reason, manual synchronization from the SkyFonts client does not cause the font to appear. Workaround: Restart the SkyFonts client
  • The Activate and Deactivate menu items in the contextual menu are not available on Sets, Folders or Smart Sets that contain both active and expired SkyFonts

Plug-Ins

Known Issues

  • Adobe Photoshop 64-bit plug-in no longer supports the "Replace" function in the plug-in request dialog
  • When using Adobe Creative Suite products to create new documents, Postscript server fonts that are activated on the server are not displayed in the Font drop down menu. Postscript fonts in an existing CS document that are activated on a server, will behave properly; the fonts will appear in the Font drop down menu and can be activated/deactivated appropriately. This issue only applies to PS server fonts, all other font types (TrueType, OpenType) work correctly. Local Postscript fonts will behave properly in Adobe Creative Suite products. Workaround: Update PS server fonts to TrueType or OpenType format

Server Users and Administrators

New – Requires Server Version 2.5 or Later

  • Added backup management features to allow adding comments to backups, automatically deleting backups and permanently keeping backups

Resolved

  • Fonts downloaded from the Server were not visible when not connected to the Server and working in offline mode
  • FontExplorer X Pro was unable to download Server fonts on login while "Download Fonts on Login" was selected in the Configure Server features
  • Most items in the Options menu were disabled when the option "Disable Client Software Updates" was activated
  • FontExplorer X Pro crashed when Windows System Fonts were placed on FontExplorer X Server and set to "Force Activate"

Known Issues

  • After updating from FontExplorer X Pro version 2.7 to version 3.0, the option “Login automatically to the server” needs to be reconfigured if it was previously turned on
  • When generating a License Report the "invalid e-mail address" warning is shown even though the "send notification" option is not selected
  • A generic error message is shown if a disabled LDAP user attempts to log in to the FontExplorer X Server
  • Font Licensing: When a change is made to the available license count on a font it is not reflected by the "Last Modified" date
  • The checkbox status of imported users is occasionally incorrectly set after deleting the group in the FontExplorer X Server Groups panel

FontExplorer X Server 2.5 is now available!

FontExplorer X Server version 2.5 works with the FontExplorer X Pro version 5.5 for Macintosh or FontExplorer X Pro version 3.5 for Windows. It is not compatible with older client versions! Before updating a server version always make a backup of your server files. You can use the backup function in the server administration section of FontExplorer X Pro

Important Notes

After updating the FontExplorer X Server version, restart any FontExplorer X Pro clients that were connected to a previous server version before logging in to the new server

Your server software license file (ServerLicense.fsl) from FontExplorer X Server version 1.x is still valid for version 2.5

Changes in Version 2.5

New

  • Added server side support for the new Server Backup Management options
  • Optimized for Microsoft .Net Framework 4.5 (Windows only)
  • Added server side support for new iType library (Windows only)
  • Added the ability to support forest environments for Kerberos Authentication (Windows only
  • Added an option to schedule replication for a specific start time when replicating every x hours
  • Added server side support for optional advanced client-server communication (non XML communication)

Resolved

  • In an Open Directory (OD) LDAP configuration, Organizational Unit (OU) Users were removed as FontExplorer X Users if "Monitor this Group" was selected during LDAP Synchronization
  • When trying force replication for several thousand fonts, the Slave Server was showing "Invalid ping" in the Logging panel (the error message "The I/O operation has been aborted because of either a thread exit or an application request"). This caused high CPU usage on the Slave Server machine when no users were connected (Windows only)
  • When force replication was started from the Master Server panel "Started/Completed" was shown instead of the percentage completed (Mac only)
  • An error appeared in the Log file when generating a font license report when grouped by users, deleted users or machines

Known Issues

  • Windows Server 2012 – When updating the FontExplorer X Server software, several installer error messages will appear with the last message offering a "Retry" option if the server was not stopped prior to updating. If this message appears, wait approximately 15 seconds before clicking on "Retry" and the installation will proceed normally. It is therefore recommended to stop the FontExplorer X Server prior to updating the software in order to avoid the situation described here
  • The User "Real Name" may be shown incorrectly in the FontExplorer X Server "Users" panel when the name contains certain accented characters
  • Font Licensing: When a change is made to the available license count on a font it is not reflected by the "Last Modified" date
  • The checkbox status of imported users may be incorrectly set after deleting the group in the FontExplorer X Server Groups panel. The "User" status is updated correctly and shows that they have been "imported"
