  • This version of FontExplorer X Pro no longer supports Mac OS X 10.5 nor the PowerPC platform. Mac OS X 10.6 or later is required
  • If working in a FontExplorer X Server environment, this client version requires FontExplorer X Server version 1.7.x or later. However, we recommend you update your server to the new version 1.8 in order to get the most out of all the great new server features. Older FontExplorer X Server versions are not supported.

Version 4.1.1

Resolved

  • Fonts permanently activated in FontExplorer X Pro were no longer available in many other Applications such as Adobe CS5/5.5/6 and QuarkXPress 8 and 9 following an update to FontExplorer X Pro 4.1. Cleaning the System and Application Font Caches generally resolved this problem
  • The Smart Set dialog did not show checkboxes for Usages, Themes or Categories so that it was not possible to create a Smart Set based on individual classifications
  • Various minor unrelated issues have been addressed

Known Issues

  • If older System Font Collections from previous OS version are available, FontExplorer X Pro may crash when performing operations with the System Font Collections under OS X 10.9. Workaround: delete the old System Font Collections from "/Users/[USERNAME]/Library/FontCollections"

Plug-Ins
Known Issues

  • Photoshop CS5–CC: Fonts in layered TIFF files are not activated by the plugin. Activation occurs correctly when converted to a PSD file
  • Missing fonts are not detected in Illustrator PDF files and no font request occurs
  • No font request occurs on EPS documents with non-embedded fonts
  • Photoshop plugin Version 3.5.1: The font request dialog will erroneously open when a Photoshop file is selected in the Open dialog. Workaround: open files via double-click or by dragging them to the Photoshop application icon

  • Added a dialog to allow users to download any non-downloaded Server Fonts for printing or use in the Character Toolbox (Mac client only)
  • Reorganized the "Options" tab into "Server Settings" and "Client Settings" for clarity (Mac client only)

FontExplorer X Server Users and Administrators
Resolved (Requires FontExplorer X Server 1.8)

  • The FontExplorer X Pro client would crash or hang if the FontExplorer X Server was restarted or manually stopped during download or upload of server fonts
  • The FontExplorer X Pro client randomly disconnected from the FontExplorer X Server during server communication due to an insufficient timeout value (Mac clients)
  • Non-downloaded PostScript Suitcase Fonts showed a number instead of a name in the font list when these fonts were not contained in any Server Set
  • Server font download and activation status was incorrect after deleting the server font cache files (fex.sdb) or when another user on the same machine downloaded server fonts (Mac clients)
  • The "Hide Source List" menu item was incorrectly disabled when logged into the FontExplorer X Server
  • The "Use LDAP Authentication" option was not being disabled when a connected domain was deleted
  • Re-authentication was required after switching out of the LDAP tab and back again (Mac clients)

FontExplorer X Server Users and Administrators
Known Issues

  • The WYSIWYG feature for non-downloaded server fonts does not support preview of Mac or Windows PostScript fonts, Apple Data-Fork Suitcase fonts nor Mac TrueType fonts. A message indicates that these fonts types need to be downloaded in order to preview

Deployment and Setup

  • Added the following terminal command which makes the Mac login account name to the default FontExplorer X Server user name. This command should only be used in connection with a FontExplorer X Pro client freshly installed from a QuickInstall application

defaults write com.linotype.fontExplorerX useLoginUsernameAsDefaultUsernameForFexServer -bool true

  • A Plugin installer tool has been added to the Plugin bundle included in the software package. To extract the bundle, right click on the FontExplorer X Pro application and select "Show Package Contents". Navigate to the "Resources" folder and copy "PlugIns.bundle" to your desktop or other location. Run the following command in the Terminal.app (modify the path accordingly):

    /Users/USERNAME/Desktop/PlugIns.bundle/Contents/Resources/plugin-installer --install

    Parameters
--rawinfo: shows info about plugins and installed applications.
--install: installs each plugin if corresponding application is found.
    --uninstall: removes installed plugins.

The script goes through each plugin and checks for the corresponding application. If found, the plugin is installed or updated. Here is a sample of the terminal response using the parameter —install:

2013-10-14 18:02:01.377 plugin-installer[2846:707] Installed PlugIn for QuarkXPress 10: NO (Application not found)
2013-10-14 18:02:01.378 plugin-installer[2846:707] Installed PlugIn for QuarkXPress 9.5: NO (Equal version already installed)

Slideshow feature – The redesigned slideshow makes it even easier to try selected fonts in your designs by simply overlaying type upon your documents

The main Preview can be configured to show when a set of pre-defined, common OpenType features are available in a Font and also to provide a preview of those features

Enhancements in the Font Information dialog's "Characters" panel for character "Info". Area is now resizeable and the maximum character size has been increased to 500 points

Exact matches can be searched for in the Font list by specifying the search string in quotes. This also enables searching for blanks which are otherwise interpreted as a separator

Resolved

The sort order of Fonts, Suitcases and Families in the small information panel was inconsistent

When activating a local Font Set or Server Set, occasionally all fonts would not activate when some of the contained fonts were previously activated or deactivated via the Font Information dialog

FontExplorer X Pro crashed when attempting to print a font sample if the sum of the margins was greater than the selected paper height or width

When a network connection went down during an import or download process, FontExplorer X Pro would occasionally hang. Error handling has been improved around network connections

During Font activation or deactivation it was possible to start other actions which caused the process to halt. Other actions are now blocked until the activation or deactivation process has completed

The Unattended.plist from a QuickInstall package contained numerous keys not relevant to FontExplorer X Pro

Known Issues

Mac OS X 10.6 only: Fonts with # in their filename will not appear in FontExplorer X when they are located in /Library/Fonts. When imported into FontExplorer X Pro or FontExplorer X Server they cannot be activated nor will they display a preview. Resolved with Mac OS X 10.7.x

After fast user switching FontExplorer X Pro refreshes the fonts in order to ensure that any System Font changes made by other users are available to all users on that machine. When doing this, the FontExplorer X Pro main window will always come to the foreground

Mac OS X 10.5.x only (Resolved with Mac OS X 10.6): Removing font suitcases from a System Collection may cause FontExplorer X Pro to crash if some of the fonts in the suitcase are not activated. This may also occur when resolving conflicts and the font suitcase is contained in a System Collection

– Using Mac OS X 10.5.8: Move the fonts you wish to keep to a new System Collection, then delete the System

PlugIns

Resolved Issues

Adobe Illustrator CS5, CS5.1 & CS6 – The error message "… User Message : LibXml: Document not parsed successfully: unknown error message" no longer appears when importing JPEG files into an Illustrator document or when viewing the link information on an image

Known PlugIn Issues:

Photoshop plugin Version 3.5.1: The font request dialog will erroneously open when a Photoshop file is selected in the Open dialog. Workaround: open files via double-click or by dragging them to the Photoshop application icon

Server Users and Server Administrators

New Features and Improvements:

Server Users "Members of Groups" information is now shown in its entirety in a tool tip. The "Member of Groups" field is also selectable so that this information can be copied and pasted

Server Users, Groups and Security Levels can now be quickly selected in their respective panels by keying the beginning alpha-numeric characters on the keyboard

The Server Groups panel contains a new option to show only the members of the selected Group

FontExplorer X Pro contains an option for providing warning messages to the user prior to the expiration of their offline font usage. This can be configured to appear any number of days prior to losing offline access to server fonts. This is set via the following terminal command on the client machine. Valid for Mac clients only. FontExplorer X Pro must be running in order for messaging to occur

To enable the warning, quit FontExplorer X Pro if it is running. Enter the following command in the terminal. Execute by hitting the Enter key.

defaults write com.linotype.fontExplorerX "warnDaysBeforeEndingOfflineUsage" 3

In the above example, the last value "3", indicates that the warning will first appear 3 days prior to losing offline access. It will appear each time FontExplorer X Pro is started until the user logs in or offline access expires.

The feature can be disabled by setting the value to "0" or by removing the key entirely from the preference file:

defaults write com.linotype.fontExplorerX "warnDaysBeforeEndingOfflineUsage" 0

Resolved Issues:

The Quick Installer did not read the setting for "Open FontExplorer X Pro at log in" from the unattended.plist when being installed on a new machine

When "Lockdown Local Fonts" was activated in the global settings it was ignored when Groups and Users were set to inherit the attribute

"Disable Client Update" global setting was incorrectly shown on the Mac client when set from the Windows client. Setting worked as specified on the Windows client but the visual representation on the Mac client was incorrect

When the Windows client set "Offline Usage" to "Not allowed" the Mac client showed "Allowed for 1 day". Setting worked as specified on the Windows client but the visual representation on the Mac client was incorrect

When offline mode expired the server name was removed from the source list and the "Manually Connect" dialog appeared but the server information field was empty. The server name is no longer removed and the "Manually Connect" dialog retains the information of the last connected FontExplorer X Server (IP or Server Name)

Server Users and Server Administrators

Resolved

  • Clients randomly disconnected from the FontExplorer X Server during periods of heavy network traffic. The timeout value for client/server communication has been increased
  • FontExplorer X Pro crashed if started while Adobe InDesign was running and the packaging script for Server Fonts was enabled
  • Server fonts were activated in FontExplorer X Pro but not available to other applications when the system function "reopen windows when logging back in" was selected (Mac OS X 10.7/10.8)
  • Manually activated server fonts used in a design document were being deactivated together with the plug-in activated fonts when the option "Deactivate fonts that have been activated by plug-ins when requesting application quits" was selected
  • When activating a Server Font Set, occasionally all fonts would not activate when some of the contained fonts were previously activated or deactivated via the Font Information dialog
  • Manually connected servers were removed from the source list if offline mode expired
  • When offline mode expired, the "Manually Connect" dialog appeared but the server information field was empty. This is now auto-filled with the last manually connected FontExplorer X Server IP or Server Name
  • Offline mode did not expire if FontExplorer X Pro was never quit
  • The Quick Installer did not read the setting for "Open FontExplorer X Pro at log in" from the unattended.plist when being installed on a new machine
  • When "Lockdown Local Fonts" was activated in the global settings it was ignored when Groups and Users were set to inherit the attribute

Server Users and Server Administrators

Known Issues

  • Mac OS X 10.6 only: Fonts with # in their filename will not appear in FontExplorer X when they are located in /Library/Fonts. When imported into FontExplorer X Pro or FontExplorer X Server they cannot be activated nor will they display a preview. Resolved with OS X 10.7.x
  • The Unattended.plist from a QuickInstall package contains numerous keys not relevant to FontExplorer X Pro. Workaround: Distribute a FontExplorer X Pro preference file (~/Library/Preferences/com.linotype.FontExplorerX.plist) with the desired settings when remotely installing FontExplorer X Pro

Changes in Version 3.5.2

Resolved Issues

  • Server fonts using the "Force Activate" option will correctly retain their activation status when FontExplorer X Pro is restarted in offline mode. Previously these fonts remained deactivated until the user logged in to the server
  • Adobe InDesign and Illustrator Users: PostScript Type 1 fonts activated from the FontExplorer X Server will correctly show kerning in Adobe InDesign CS5+ and Illustrator CS5+ applications. Previously this only worked with CS4 or earlier versions of the Adobe applications or when using locally activated PostScript fonts
  • Adobe InDesign Users: Added a FontExplorer X Pro preference key which will control whether server fonts are visible or invisible when running the InDesign packaging function. To make server fonts visible for the packaging process, quit FontExplorer X Pro and Adobe InDesign. On the client workstation, enter the following command in the Terminal application followed by the Enter key:

defaults write com.linotype.FontExplorerX disableIndesignPackageFixScript -bool FALSE

To make server fonts invisible again for the packager enter the following command in the Terminal application followed by the Enter key:

defaults write com.linotype.FontExplorerX disableIndesignPackageFixScript -bool TRUE

If no action is taken, the server fonts will continue to be packaged invisibly

Known Issues

  • Mac OS X 10.6 only: Fonts with # in their filename will not appear in FontExplorer X when they are located in /Library/Fonts. When imported into FontExplorer X Pro or FontExplorer X Server they cannot be activated nor will they display a preview. Resolved with OS X 10.7.x
  • After fast user switching FontExplorer X Pro refreshes the fonts in order to ensure that any System Font changes made by other users are available to all users on that machine. When doing this, the FontExplorer X Pro main window will always come to the foreground
  • Mac OS X 10.5.x only (Resolved with Mac OS X 10.6): Removing font suitcases from a System Collection may cause FontExplorer X Pro to crash if some of the fonts in the suitcase are not activated. This may also occur when resolving conflicts and the font suitcase is contained in a System Collection
  • Using Mac OS X 10.5.8 – Move the fonts you wish to keep to a new System Collection, then delete the System Collection containing the suitcase font

      • Photoshop CS5 crashes when the FontExplorer X Pro plug-in is installed but FontExplorer X Pro or its license is missing. Solution: Remove the FontExplorer X Pro Plug-in
      • After fast user switching FontExplorer X Pro refreshes the fonts in order to ensure that any System Font changes made by other users are available to all users on that machine. When doing this, the FontExplorer X Pro main window will always come to the foreground
      • When attempting to overwrite FontExplorer X Pro with a newer version, a "Fatal Error … unauthorized bundle" message may appear when there is a problem with permissions on the file you are attempting to replace. Should this occur, delete the older version of FontExplorer X and re-copy the newer version to your Applications folder
      • PlugIns: Font activation with Adobe Photoshop CS3/CS4/CS5: Situation: Fonts have been activated by FontExplorer X Pro (automatically or manually) after starting the program Adobe Photoshop CS3, CS4 or CS5. Selecting a text layer in Photoshop will cause a message to appear stating that the fonts are missing for the text layer and font substitution will occur. Continue? This message should be responded to with "OK". Activated fonts will be correctly displayed and not substituted.

? Using Mac OS X 10.5.6 – Activate or deactivate the entire suitcase and then remove the suitcase from the collection

? Using Mac OS X 10.5.8 – Move the fonts you wish to keep to a new System Collection, then delete the System Collection containing the suitcase font

Release notes

Important Information

For Server connect the release 2.5.x of FontExplorer® X Pro
requires FontExplorer X Server version 1.5.x.
It is not compatible with older server versions.

Changes in version 2.5.2

New Features

  • System Font Protection: Mac OS X has a System method, that monitors the System Font Folder and checks whether all "protected" System Fonts are still in place. If not, they will be copied back into the System Font directory. FontExplorer X Pro 2.5.2 introduces a function to the “Tools” menu which can turn System Font Protection on or off. When turning System Font Protection back on, you can optionally restore removed system fonts. (Requires OS 10.5 or higher)
Note: If you have turned System Font Protection off and replaced System Fonts you should not use the "Clean System Fonts Folders…" feature as doing so will remove your replacement System Fonts

  • Added "Languages" to the Information Area – shows the languages that a font supports. This can be activated via the "Customize" dialog (Menu: View > Customize… or right-click in the Information Area)

  • Global Font Request and Activation Conflict dialogs now show the font format of listed fonts

New Features for FontExplorer X Server Users

  • "Font Format" and "Last Modified by" information added to the License View panel

  • A new "Download Now" button in the Summary & Login panel enables you to download all new server fonts with one click. Optionally you can set this to occur on login

  • It is now possible to "hide" FontExplorer X servers in the source list. They can be shown again with the "Show hidden servers" command

  • Server sets which are set to force download are now identifiable by their icon

  • Any manually connected server that has been logged in to now remains in the source list. It is no longer necessary to manually reconnect each time FontExplorer X is started

Resolved

  • Font classification checkboxes would scroll out of view under Mac OS X 10.4 making them inaccessible

  • The color chooser dialog would incorrectly reopen on certain actions

  • Fonts activated by plug-ins will now follow the settings for automatic deactivation in the Preferences > Advanced panel. They will no longer automatically deactivate when FontExplorer X Pro quits – unless specified in the preference settings

  • A small number of specific fonts would cause a crash when opening the Font Information Dialog

  • Adobe Illustrator CS5 PlugIn (Mac OS X 10.6 only): Both Adobe Illustrator and FontExplorer X Pro would hang when a plug-in font request caused FontExplorer X Pro to launch

  • Adobe Photoshop CS3/CS4/CS5 PlugIn: Photoshop no longer hangs when dropping multiple PDF documents on the Photoshop Dock icon

  • Adobe Photoshop CS3/CS4/CS5 PlugIn: Photoshop crashes when "Activate All" is selected in the plug-in dialog (timing related)

  • Various unrelated crashes

Known issues

  • Offline server fonts/sets are not shown after manually connecting a hidden server. Workaround: Use the "Show hidden server" command instead of manually connecting or log in and out of the server after a manual connection

  • Plug-ins will not activate fonts required by graphic objects (EPS) contained in a document. You may either manually activate these fonts prior to opening the document or embed the required fonts in graphic objects

  • After fast user switching FontExplorer X Pro refreshes the fonts in order to ensure that any System Font changes made by other users are available to all users on that machine. When doing this, the FontExplorer X Pro main window will always come to the foreground.

  • PlugIns: Font activation with Adobe Photoshop CS3/CS4/CS5:
Situation: Fonts have been activated by FontExplorer X Pro (automatically or manually) after starting the program Adobe Photoshop CS3, CS4 or CS5. Selecting a text layer in Photoshop will cause a message to appear stating that the fonts are missing for the text layer and font substitution will occur. Continue? This message should be responded to with "OK". Activated fonts will be correctly displayed and not substituted.

  • PlugIns: Font activation for Adobe Illustrator Documents:
When opening a document Illustrator will always display the "Font Problems" dialog stating that the fonts were not found and that missing fonts have been substituted. Respond to this with "Open". If manual font activation is in effect, the PlugIn dialog will now be shown and you can manually activate your fonts. When using auto activation the fonts will be automatically activated. The Illustrator document will initially be displayed using a default font. Within a few seconds the fonts will automatically update.

  • Mac OS X 10.5.x only (Resolved with Mac OS X 10.6): Removing font suitcases from a System Collection may cause FontExplorer X Pro to crash if some of the fonts in the suitcase are not activated. Release notes

Important Information

For Server connect the release 2.5.x of FontExplorer® X Pro
requires FontExplorer X Server version 1.5.x.
It is not compatible with older server versions.

Changes in version 2.5.1

New Features

  • Added PlugIns for Adobe Illustrator CS5, Adobe InDesign CS5 and Adobe PhotoShop CS5 (Intel Macs, OS 10.5 or higher).
  • Added the menu item "Log out" to the server context menu and to the "Server" menu.
  • Users with offline permission will now have access to their downloaded server fonts at all times. Offline mode will automatically be in effect whenever disconnected from the server – prior to login and following logout. The Work Offline and Work Online menu items have therefore been removed from the server context menu.

Resolved

  • Offline mode would not go into effect after restarting FontExplorer X Pro when disconnected from the FontExplorer X Server.
  • Increasing/Decreasing the Preview font size via the toolbar icons did not produce the correct result.
  • When QuarkXPress 8 was installed, the option to clean the QuarkXPress font caches was occasionally disabled in the "Clean Application Font Caches" dialog.
  • It was possible to drag multiple items to the name field of a Set or Folder making the names in the source list unreadable. This is no longer possible. Multi-line Set names that occurred with an earlier version of FontExplorer X Pro will be reduced to one line following this software update. It is however, recommended to correct the names to avoid extremely long entries in the Information Area and Smart Set dialog. To do this:
    • Select the Set or Folder
    • Double click on the name or hit the Enter key
    • Assign a new meaningful name
  • Resolved with Mac OS X 10.6.3 – Postscript Type 1 fonts residing in a suitcase which contained more than 10 font styles would not always activate in FontExplorer X Pro and their preview showed "Not Available".
  • Mac OS X 10.6.x only: Right-clicking in the Summary tab of the Font Information dialog would produce a crash.
  • "Contained in" did not show all the Sets a font was contained in but instead only showed the Font Library. This effected both the small information area in the lower left of the main window and the Summary tab of the Font Information dialog.
  • Adobe InDesign CS3 & CS4 PlugIn: With certain documents InDesign would hang during font activation.
  • Various unrelated crashes.

Known issues

  • When attempting to overwrite FontExplorer X Pro with a newer version, a "Fatal Error … unauthorized bundle" message may appear when there is a problem with permissions on the file you are attempting to replace. Should this occur, delete the older version of FontExplorer X and re-copy the newer version to your Applications folder.
  • Plug-ins will not activate fonts required by graphic objects (EPS) contained in a document. You may either manually activate these fonts prior to opening the document or embed the required fonts in graphic objects.
  • Mac OS X 10.5.x only (Resolved with Mac OS X 10.6):Removing font suitcases from a System Collection may cause FontExplorer X Pro to crash if some of the fonts in the suitcase are not activated. This may also occur when resolving conflicts and the font suitcase is contained in a System Collection

    • Using Mac OS X 10.5.8 – Move the fonts you wish to keep to a new System Collection, then delete the System Collection containing the suitcase font
  • Mac OS X  10.4 only: Checkboxes in the Font Classification dialog are not shown under Mac OS X 10.4 but Auto Classification still works correctly.
  • When the FontExplorer X Pro main window is closed with Cmd+W or Cmd+0 any time after the color picker window was visible, the color picker window will be reopened. Workaround: Use Cmd+H to hide FontExplorer X Pro and the color picker will not be displayed.
  • After fast user switching FontExplorer X Pro refreshes the fonts in order to ensure that any System Font changes made by other users are available to all users on that machine. When doing this, the FontExplorer X Pro main window will always come to the foreground.
  • PlugIns: Font activation with Adobe Photoshop CS3/CS4/CS5. Release notes

Important Information

For Server connect the release 2.5 of FontExplorer® X Pro
requires FontExplorer X Server version 1.5.
It is not compatible with older server versions.

Changes in version 2.5

New Features

  • Reworked interface – The interface of FontExplorer X Pro has been streamlined and now better suits the changed functionality. The Library has a new structure to enable administrators to hide certain areas from users view in a FontExplorer X Server environment.
  • Wide Screen Mode – FontExplorer X Pro now features an optional Wide-Screen mode that sets the preview area to the right. Now users of wide-screen displays can make full use of the whole view area of their display by simply clicking the wide-screen icon.
  • Transparency Mode – The preview area of the main window and the detailed preview of the Info window can now be switched to transparency mode and can be set to different levels. Using this functionality to lay the FontExplorer X Pro window over an existing document, users can get a idea of how certain fonts will look when used in this document.

Additionally it can be used to automatically set classification by receiving this data from the Linotype Server. The automatic classification is available for all fonts that have such an entry in the Linotype database.
  • Print – FontExplorer X Pro now has a printing feature and as you would expect, it is the most versatile on the market. Users can easily create their own templates to print an overview of their fonts or use one of the templates that come preinstalled. Configuration is accomplished through drag and drop of page elements, more detailed settings are available for every option. The preview shows a WYSIWYG view that automatically updates when you change the elements. This feature is available for Mac OS X 10.5 or later.

  • Mac OS X 10.6: Fonts activated in FontExplorer X Pro would not appear in the Apple font panel if the application was already started when font activation occurred.
  • Mac OS X 10.6: Fonts deactivated in FontExplorer X Pro would still appear in the Apple font panel if the application was running when the font was deactivated.
  • When FontExplorer X Pro was specified as a startup item, the main window would be hidden after starting.
  • When scanning large InDesign CS3 or CS4 documents for fonts, FontExplorer X Pro would occasionally crash.
  • Server fonts would become disabled and could not be re-enabled after fast user switching or use of the "refresh fonts" function.
  • The plug-in dialog will now show the names of all sets containing the font detected for activation.
  • Adobe InDesign CS3 & InDesign CS4: InDesign no longer crashes when an Active Directory user attempts to open a document.

If working in a FontExplorer X Server environment, this client version requires FontExplorer X Server version 1.7.x or later. • Smart Sets do not work correctly when placed in Folders
  • The activation status of a folder is not correctly shown in the source list when all fonts in the contained set are activated. This only occurs when the setting "Show status when activating/deactivating fonts" is disabled
  • When a subscription font does not appear in FontExplorer X Pro for any reason, manual synchronization from the SkyFonts client does not cause the font to appear. Workaround: Restart the SkyFonts client

Postscript fonts in an existing CS document that are activated on a server, will behave properly; the fonts will appear in the Font dropdown menu and can be activated/deactivated appropriately. This issue only applies to PS server fonts, all other font types (TrueType, OpenType) work correctly. The work around is for the customer to update their PS server font to one of these other font formats. Local Postscript fonts will behave properly in Adobe Creative Suite products

The 'Activate' button was incorrectly enabled for a Set which contained only missing fonts

Deactivating a font in the Font Information dialog caused the checkbox to dim but the font did not deactivate until the window was closed

A crash would occur when importing fonts into FontExplorer X Pro if the Organize Font option was active and insufficient disk space was available for the new fonts

An empty drop down menu was shown in the Conflicts panel when the language was set to German

Style linking in the font list did not work

Postscript font family name, unique name, and postscript name were being incorrectly displayed on the main name of a TrueType Collection

The status of "Activate" and "Deactivate" in the Ribbon toolbar was not updated correctly after activating or deactivating fonts in the font list

Known Issues

On a multi-user machine (one machine with separate login accounts) FontExplorer X Pro can only be launched by one user. If another user attempts to launch FontExplorer X Pro a message will be displayed: "FontExplorer X Pro is already running in another user session"

Manually activated PostScript fonts do not display in Adobe applications when font activation is temporary. Workaround: select Activate fonts permanently (required when using Adobe applications) in Options/Advanced panel or activate fonts via the plug-in font request dialog

The auto-activation setting will not be effective for the Quark XPress Plug-Ins. When opening a Quark XPress document, the plug-in dialog will always open. If all the fonts are available in FontExplorer X Pro simply click on Activate All

Smart Sets do not work correctly when placed in Folders

The activation status of a folder is not correctly shown in the source list when all fonts in the contained set are activated. This only occurs when the setting "Show status when activating/deactivating fonts" is disabled

When a subscription font does not appear in FontExplorer X Pro for any reason, manual synchronization from the SkyFonts client does not cause the font to appear. Workaround: Restart the SkyFonts client

The PDF is not correctly generated when exporting OpenType PostScript flavored fonts from the preview as a PDF image. Other image formats work correctly

The Activate and Deactivate menu items in the contextual menu are not available on Sets, Folders or Smart Sets that contain both active and expired SkyFonts

PlugIns

Resolved

Adobe Illustrator CS6, 64-bit, Version 3.5.2

The 64-bit version of the Adobe Illustrator CS6 application would crash when exiting if the FontExplorer X Pro plugin was installed

Plugins

Known Issues

Adobe Creative Suite applications

When using Adobe Creative Suite products to create new documents, Postscript server fonts that are activated on the server are not displayed in the Font dropdown menu.

Server Users and Administrators

Resolved

When manually connecting to a FontExplorer X Server it was not possible to connect via the server name. Only the IP address was accepted. Now both IP address and server name are accepted

Auto login to the FontExplorer X Server did not occur until the server name was selected in the source list. Now, when the auto login option is selected, login automatically occurs when FontExplorer X Pro is started

Usernames in the Summary and Login panel would lose the domain extension on their username after logging out or restarting FontExplorer X Pro if LDAP authentication was turned off. Now the full LDAP imported user name will be retained in the Username field

An incorrect download date was being shown on downloaded server fonts. Instead of showing "1/1/1970" the correct download date will now be shown

Fonts were occasionally being shown as "downloaded" even though the font license for a particular Font or Machine was reclaimed

Swap option was not working correctly when a conflict occurred between activated local and server fonts

The status of the Activate and Deactivate menu items was not correctly shown in the Preview contextual menu after previously activating or deactivating a font through the contextual menu

A server folder which was deleted through the Ribbon toolbar function reappeared after "Reload Sources"

There was no error message shown when an e-mail address in the SMTP settings had an incorrect format

E-mail addresses were not check for plausibility when requesting a License Report (Send Report). A "Success" message was incorrectly shown

Empty Server Folders were not being shown in the source list after logging out from the FontExplorer X Server and entering Offline Mode

When license violations were detected on login, clicking "Show Licenses" did not automatically produce a list of the violations

"Activate" and "Download" options were not correctly enabled/disabled after activating a server set via the contextual menu

The "Activating" and "Deactivating" status message showed an incorrect number of fonts when a server set or folder contained TrueType Collections

It was not possible to remove newly imported fonts from a server set without logging out and back in again

After reclaiming all font licenses from a machine, the machine name still showed up in the "Assigned" list under License View although there were no fonts listed

Server Users and Administrators

Known Issues

FontExplorer X Pro shows incorrect server set and/or server folder information in the source list when a user only has login permission

When switching between LDAP nodes after changes have been made to LDAP data, no 'Save' dialogue is shown

When both FontExplorer X Pro and FontExplorer X Server are installed on Virtual Machines, occasionally all the fonts from a client are reclaimed when using the option "Reclaim Font License > From All Machines" to reclaim a single font from the client

When a manually added FontExplorer X Server is hidden in the source, the entry will not be hidden until FontExplorer X Pro is restarted

Release notes

FontExplorer X Server version 1.9 works with the FontExplorer X Pro version 4.2 for Macintosh or FontExplorer X Pro version 2.6 for Windows. It is not compatible with older client versions!
Before updating a server version always make a backup of your server files. You can use the backup function in the server administration section of FontExplorer X Pro.

Important Notes

After updating the FontExplorer X Server version, restart any FontExplorer X Pro clients that were connected to a previous server version before logging in to the new server

Changes in Version 1.9

New Features

  • The FontExplorer X Server allows users to login multiple times from different machines or user accounts. This is an option which administrators can set via the client. It can be assigned globally or to specific users and groups
  • Added the ability to specify a separate destination path for generated License Reports. This can be defined in the General pane of the FontExplorer X Server panel
  • The FontExplorer X Server now requires an additional port for communication. The port number is equal to the standard port plus 2 and is automatically filled in on the server panel when the standard port is defined or when updating the server software
  • The "Browse all Server Fonts" feature has been extended to now also provide previews for fonts in Mac TrueType and Mac dfont formats
  • The "Users" panel of FontExplorer X Server also shows the "System Username" in order to determine when a user is logged in from different user accounts on the same machine

Resolved

  • The Slave Server did not restart when force replicated from the Master Server if the network connection had been temporarily lost. The Slave Server remained in a running state
  • Some font entries were missing in the Font License Report file when the filter was set to group by "Fonts"
  • When an LDAP Security Group name contained certain characters (asterisk, parenthesis, slash, hyphen or underscore) then users contained in that group were not shown
  • The FontExplorer X Server license file (.fsl) could not be imported into the FontExplorer X Server when running on Windows 2008 if file encryption was active

Known Issues

  • The FontExplorer X Server may stop running when accessing an LDAP Security Group which contains more than 1000 users
  • Imported LDAP users are not shown in Account Management and status shows "not imported" if before completing the import process a source list item is selected, the changes in the LDAP panel saved, then return to the LDAP panel and complete the import process
  • If a nested LDAP Security Group name contains special characters such as *, ⁄, ( or ) then the users inside the nested group are not shown
  • Window Server 2012 – When updating the FontExplorer X Server software, several installer error messages will appear with the last message offering a "Retry" option if the server was not stopped prior to updating. If this message appears, wait approximately 15 seconds before clicking on "Retry" and the installation will proceed normally. It is therefore recommended to stop the FontExplorer X Server prior to updating the software in order to avoid the situation described here
  • The User "Real Name" may be shown incorrectly in the FontExplorer X Server "Users" panel when the name contains certain accented characters
  • Font Licensing: When a change is made to the available license count on a font it is not reflected by the "Last Modified" date
  • The checkbox status of imported users is occasionally incorrectly set after deleting the group in the FontExplorer X Server Groups panel

For server user or server administrator client side changes, please see the Macintosh or Windows client release notes

  • SMTP configuration information was not being passed from the Master server to the Slave server during replication. License reports and auto error reporting could not be sent from the Slave server
  • Removing a monitored group from the active directory where all users were already imported into FontExplorer X Server, did not automatically remove the group and its users from the FontExplorer X Server when a scheduled synchronization occurred

Before updating a server version always make a backup of your server files.

You can use the backup function in the server administration section of FontExplorer X Pro.

Important Notes:

  • After updating the FontExplorer X Server version, restart any FontExplorer X Pro clients that were connected to a previous server version before logging in to the new server
  • When updating FontExplorer X Server version 1.5.x to version 1.7.x in a Master/Slave configuration, be sure to configure and save the domain information for the Master server via the LDAP panel of the client. Thereafter, restart the Slave server so replication occurs and the LDAP configuration changes get copied to the Slave server

Changes in Version 1.7.1

New or Changed Server Features:

  • When an LDAP synchronization fails, further attempts will automatically occur at 30 minute intervals. If, after three attempts, it is still not possible to synchronize, an error message will be logged and an e-mail send to the administrator provided the e-mail settings have been configured. On manual synchronization, an error message will be displayed on the client machine that initiated the synchronization command

Resolved Issues:

  • Following an update from FontExplorer X Server version 1.5.x to 1.7 it was not possible to download fonts from the server
  • If a scheduled synchronization failed due to an error on the LDAP server, users already imported into FontExplorer X Server were getting deleted
  • After updating from FontExplorer X Server version 1.6.1 to 1.7, it occasionally occurred that the used font license counts were no longer accurate
  • When the FontExplorer X and LDAP servers went into an idle state for an extended period of time (24+ hours) immediately following a synchronization, users were getting deleted from the FontExplorer X Server
  • The FontExplorer X Server crashed and automatically restarted if the LDAP server was unavailable at the time a scheduled synchronization started
  • Configured domains may sporadically disappear from the FontExplorer X LDAP panel if the LDAP server could not be reached
  • The FontExplorer X Server preference pane in System Preferences would occasionally hang (Macintosh only)
  • The port number in the FontExplorer X Server "Slave" panel was displayed incorrectly under OS X 10.8 (Macintosh only)

Known Issues:

  • SMTP configuration information is not passed from the Master server to the Slave server during replication. License reports and auto error reporting can therefore not be sent from the Slave server
  • Removing a monitored group from the active directory where all users were already imported into FontExplorer X Server, will not automatically remove the group and its users from the FontExplorer X Server when a scheduled synchronization occurs
  • When FontExplorer X Server has been updated from 1.5.x or 1.6.x, the domain name is not automatically appended to the LDAP imported server group names
  • The FontExplorer X Server occasionally crashes when deleting a server group after updating from 1.5.x to 1.6.x to 1.7.1. This does not occur on a new installation of version 1.7.x
  • Following an upgrade from FontExplorer X Server version 1.5.x to 1.7.1, server users at the LDAP root node will be erroneously deleted when a new root node user is imported. The deleted root node user will show the status "Not Imported" in the LDAP panel
  • The FontExplorer X Server license file (.fsl) can not be imported to a Windows Server 2008 machine when file encryption is active. Workaround: disable file encryption before importing the license file
  • Font Licensing: When a change is made to the available license count on a font it is not reflected by the "Last Modified" date
  • The User "Real Name" may be shown incorrectly in the FontExplorer X Server "Users" panel when the name contains certain accented characters
  • The FontExplorer X Server is unable to access a mapped drive for the destination of server backup files (Windows only)
  • Synchronization may fail when new users are added to a monitored LDAP root node
  • Groups and users deleted on the Active Directory are sometimes not deleted in the FontExplorer X Groups or Users panel following a synchronization
  • The checkbox status of imported users may be incorrectly set after deleting the group in the FontExplorer X Server Groups panel

Changes in Version 1.6.1

Resolved Issues:

  • Fonts uploaded to the FontExplorer X Server version 1.6 were sometimes missing after restarting the server. This could also be seen after restoring a backup or after server replication, both of which require a server restart
  • Fixed an issue where login was slow when connecting to servers with many nested sets and folders
  • Server error messages were not shown correctly when the language was set to French
  • LDAP directory was not displayed correctly when accessing Open Directory (Mac client only)
  • With "Hide Library" enabled, users with "Write" permissions on Sets were able to select File>Import
  • Connection between server and client was periodically lost during font upload/download
  • After a long connection (more than 8 hours) users were not notified that their login had expired and were forced to quit the client in order to log in again
  • In the LDAP Configure Domains window, the Domain Name field allowed entry of IP addresses. An error is now displayed when attempting to save the configuration
  • In the LDAP Configure Domains window, the Domain Name field was labeled "IP or Hostname" in the German and French translations. This has been changed to "Domain Name" (German: "Domänen-Name:" French: "Nom de Domaine")
  • After upgrades of server with LDAP Authentication enabled, administrators were not automatically directed to LDAP Configure Domains window and instructed to enter domain information
  • Windows server panel Backup Destination now allows selection of a network directory for backup
  • Offline usage information in the small info panel is not displayed accurately when not logged in to the FontExplorer X Server
  • Slave servers would sometimes fail to automatically restart, especially after long replications. This would require manually restarting the server panel and the server to correct the issue
  • Slave replication would loop if replication time was less than a minute
  • LDAP Synchronization would occasionally assign users to the wrong group

Server New Features:

  • The Slave server will now attempt to restart itself multiple times in the event of restart failures after replication (Windows only)
  • The Windows server can now be configured in the Logging tab to send email notification of server crashes

Server known issues:

  • Due to changes to better handle concurrent user load, server upload and download times may be slower than those seen with FontExplorer X Server version 1.5
  • OS X 10.4 only: "Check for updates" will fail when updating FontExplorer X Server software version 1.6 to version 1.6.1. A message "The update is improperly signed" will be shown which must be responded to with "Cancel update". Workaround: Download the new server version from the FontExplorer X website at www.fontexplorerx.com/download. Click on "Download FontExplorer X Server 1.6.1 for Mac and Windows including FontExplorer X Pro Clients for Mac and Windows" and install the FontExplorer X Server.pkg located in the folder "Server Mac"
