Troubleshooting

Q: I get an error, "No fonts with the specified format(s) were found in the selected files or folders." when importing fonts

A: There are a few reasons why this error message could appear:

  • You have selected Windows PostScript fonts which are not compatible with OS X
  • You have selected a folder that doesn’t contain any fonts
  • You are attempting to import fonts from a folder where you do not have read permission. You can check this by clicking on the font folder and selecting "Get Info" from the File Menu in the Finder. Expand the "Sharing & Permissions" section at the bottom of the window. If you do not have "read" permission, you can change this for the folder and apply it to all enclosed items via the action popup menu. (Authentication is required to change permissions.)

Q: I have upgraded from FontExplorer X version 1.2.3 to FontExplorer X Pro and my sets and smartsets are now missing

A: The database file from FontExplorer X 1.2.3 is copied and automatically converted to the Pro format the first time you start FontExplorer X Pro. This file contains all your set and smartset information. Occasionally, information may be lost during the conversion process. If this occurs, please contact customer support. They will be able to repair this file for you. Alternatively, the file can be automatically repaired after upgrading to FontExplorer X Pro 2.5. You can download version 2.5 on the trial version page.

Q: When I restart my system the activated fonts are no longer active although the setting in the preferences is “Never Deactivate”. What is wrong?

A: If you are running under OS X 10.4 and have updated from FontExplorer X 1.2.3 there may be a problem with the database file which records which fonts to automatically activate upon system startup. Please contact customer support. They will be able to repair this file for you. Alternatively, the file can be automatically repaired after upgrading to FontExplorer X Pro 2.5. You can download the current version of FontExplorer X Pro on the trial version page.

Q: I get the message "Loading Resources" when I opened FontExplorer X Pro for the first time and it does not disappear. What can I do?

A: This message appears on every startup of FontExplorer X Pro and usually should disappear. However, there may be some instances after initial install of the software that this dialog message remains. If the message persists, Quit or Force Quit FontExplorer X Pro. Now in the Finder navigate to /Users/[YourUserName]/Library/Application Support/Linotype/FontExplorer X/

Important: The following steps will reset FontExplorer X Pro by deleting certain files. Please note that deleting the db (Data Base) files will also erase all sets, settings, fonts, etc. This is only recommended when installing the software for the very first time. Delete the FontExplorer X.fexdb located in this directory, and launch FontExplorer X Pro again, (this will initiate the setup routine again).

Q: I forgot a command or how to use a feature or function in FontExplorer X Pro; can you point me toward available menu commands and help topics?

A: Applications running under Mac OS X Leopard contain a search field in the Help menu. Simply choose Help on the menu or press Command+Shift+? to open the Help menu and start typing into the search field. This displays a dynamic list of search results sorted into Menu Items and Help Topics. Enjoy more helpful Help. A new search field in the Help menu displays all relevant menu items in the active application. Highlight one and FontExplorer X Pro opens the menu and highlights the command.
